Why M&A bankers need to be tech specialists
Clearly, technology has become a Must-have in the world of Fusions and Acquisitions:First, its makes consolidation easier. Indeed, as the software industry is concentrating, and shifting to Saas, it provides stronger and more standard IT platforms in the case of companies merging with each other. Those platforms in turn reduce the integration risks (faster and cheaper migrations)
Second, it facilitates the evaluation and implementation of Synergies: one key element is indeed understanding which technology platform the acquirer and target run on and the financial implications both short term (is there a need to buy a license in case of change of control) and mid-term (which target platform)
Finally, Tech experts can support both acquirers and sellers reinvent their business model in the context of a transaction (expertise in digital go to market in particular)
So blending skills in the Transaction banking industry will indeed make the difference in the coming months and years.
